JUN 14: MOVIE WATCHLIST

 BLACK HORROR: A REWATCHATHON

- The Blackening
(Horror Comedy) 9/10
She's corny on purpose in the best way. And none of our core cast dies cause in Black horror we don't kill off our people.

- Get Out
(Horror Classic)
10/10
This as a rewatch is absolutely insane. The care that is put into Daniel Kaluuya's character and the circulatory of his path is so masterful. You see something new in each watch. It's a classic in my opinion for a reason and sets the standard in the genre (side note: I am so unbelievably excited for Jordan Peele's next film 'Him' coming out this September)

- Blink Twice
(Psychological Thriller)
9/10
I love this movie for its trueness to its film category. Billionaire on an Island doing diabolical shit to unsuspecting guests of which our heroine is the only one asking questions. The Ayo Edebiri film Opus that just come out of A24 (consistent with the quality psychological horrors) fits this same archetype, but I think I enjoyed this film more. Likely due to the Channing Tatum of it all but I love the choices made in this film. Songs and clues and progressions. The second watch made every small comment feel a lot like translating a language that I could only catch in bits and pieces the first watch because I was figuring it out real time.

- They Clone Tyrone
Sci-Fi Comedy
10/10
Okay I know it's technically not a horror, but it does fit the greater MO of horrifying things to Black folk, and I felt pretty damn scared myself, so it counts on my list. This film is on my Jamie Foxx favorites list.
        - White House Down (the best president ever)
        - They Cloned Tyrone
        - Project Power (we'll revisit this one)
This film was one of those movies that sticks with you, not only because it's hilarious and unique and the black folk reclaim their narrative and win in the end as a ragtag group of unlikely allies but because it could very well be real. It's scary because it's based in truth. The Tuskegee airmen and Henrietta Lacks. Hell, the crack epidemic. We have been used as lab rats a billion and one times in this country and a film that centers this concept as a sci-fi by nature is also a psychological thriller and a horror and historical fiction and a documentary. It's only scary because it could happen. it could only happen because it already has. And they somehow make that pill much easier to swallow with a star-studded leading cast who carry the production with comedic ingenuity.

-Project Power
(Sci Fi Action)
10/10
This is one of my favorite movies in the last five years. It's not often a movie with no romance holds me so absolutely. And this one not only did that but gave this beautiful story of a black girl being protected and nurtured by two separate father figures fighting their own demons heavily. All while she brews on this talent in music that could truly get her places. Lowkey, it makes me think of Sinners a bit. Which would absolutely be on this list if it was available on any of my current streaming platforms (but trust that will change soon). Music is an interesting but consistently recurring medium for liberation in Black filmography.
